The Effects of Mother-Child Attachment Promotion Therapy Program for Autistic Children on Mother’s Parenting Stress

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mother-child Attachment Promotion Therapy Program(APT) for autistic children on mother’s parenting stress and to identify factors reducing parenting stress using the in-depth interview and constant comparative method. Subjects were 11 mothers of children of 2-4 years old with autism. A 8-session APT was conducted once a week. The instrument used in the study to address the research questions was scales of the Parenting Stress Index. The results were as follows; Frist, there were significant changes in mothers’ parenting stress. Second, the concrete contents of reducing parenting stress were ‘increasing interaction with their child’, ‘increasing parenting competence’, ‘facilitating general development of child’, ‘emotional comfort’. This study will be able to inform educators and program developers for reducing parenting stress of autistic children.
